St. Augustine’s TTC – Ishiara: Building the Future of Teaching

It is my honor, as the Principal of St. Augustine’s Teachers Training College – Ishiara, to extend warm greetings to all our students, staff, stakeholders, and partners in education. Our college stands as teachers of integrity – beacon of hope and transformation, preparing teachers who will lead the delivery of Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and shape learners for the 21st century.

In our vision, mission and motto- “Charity in Truth” they reflects our commitment to producing teachers who are both professionally skilled, morally and ethically grounded.

Courses Offered at St. Augustine’s TTC – Ishiara

  1. Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education (DSTE) – Which:-
    • Prepares teachers to handle CBC-aligned Junior/senior secondary school subjects.
    • Focuses on pedagogy, subject mastery, ICT integration, and practical teaching.
    • Includes micro-teaching and extended practicum to equip trainees with classroom management and learner-centered approaches.
  2. Diploma in Teacher Education (DTE – Pre-Primary and Primary and P1 Upgrading & P&P)
    • Designed for primary school teachers under the CBC framework.
    • Strengthens professional skills in literacy, numeracy, integrated science, social studies, and values education.
    • Supports the retooling of teachers transitioning into CBC.
  3. Diploma in Guidance and Psychological Counselling
    • Equips teachers with counseling, mentorship, and life-skills education to address the psychological and social needs of learners and teachers.
    • Aligns with the CBC emphasis on holistic learner development—cognitive, emotional and moral.

So Far the college has been able to do the following:-

  • CBC Integration: All programs embed CBC principles—learner-centered approaches, competency development, formative assessment, and inclusivity.
  • ICT in Teaching: ICT labs and digital literacy courses ensure our graduates can integrate technology into teaching and assessment.
  • Micro-Teaching & Practicum: Trainees undergo structured teaching practice, supervised by tutors and guided by KNEC & MoE assessment tools.
  • Guidance & Mentorship: Counseling programs have strengthened teacher trainees’ capacity to support learners’ emotional well-being.
  • Partnerships: The college collaborates with schools and education stakeholders for practicum placements and curriculum enrichment.

Where We Should Be Going

To remain relevant in Kenya’s teacher education reforms and global education trends, St. Augustine’s TTC must expand and diversify its programs:

  1. New Courses to Support Teacher Education
    • Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE): To prepare teachers for foundational years under CBC.
    • Special Needs Education (SNE): To produce teachers skilled in inclusive education, in line with CBC’s principle of equity.
    • ICT in Education & Digital Pedagogy: Short courses and diplomas to equip teachers with advanced digital teaching tools.
    • Educational Leadership & Administration: To prepare school leaders and managers for CBC and 21st-century institutions.
    • Technical & Vocational Teacher Training: To align with TVET reforms and Kenya’s skill-based development agenda.
  2. Strengthening Research & Innovation
    • Establishing a CBC resource and innovation hub to develop teaching aids, conduct action research and provide teacher support.
  3. Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
    • Offering CPD programs for practicing teachers in CBC delivery, curriculum design, and classroom management.
  4. Infrastructure Expansion
    • Smart classrooms, upgraded libraries, digital learning platforms and counseling centers to support diversified learning needs.

As Principal, I reaffirm our commitment to growing St. Augustine’s TTC – Ishiara into a leading teacher training college in Kenya—one that not only meets the requirements of the CBC but also sets standards in teacher professionalism, spiritual, ethics and innovation.

We are building a future where our graduates will stand out as competent, creative and compassionate educators who inspire generations of learners and contribute meaningfully to Kenya’s educational transformation.
